Men who wear sweaters
(double click for more detail)
I am knitting this sweater for the shop. It is from "Men in Knits" Interweave Press and it is out of Rowan Polar.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the sweater and I only have one and a half sleeves to go, but who is going to wear it? Everytime I have knit anything for a man it has been a disaster (Annie, don't do it!). Mr Yarn wouldn't in a million years wear this sweater. It is too big for almost everyone I know. You are asking yourself why I knit it, aren't you? Well, it was another mannequin story. I will save HIM for another time. I am making this for a male mannequin that I bought for the shop. It ends up that the mannequin that I bought is a bit scrawny. This sweater is going to swim on him (I will probably name this mannequin "Chip").
Anyhow, the moral of the story. . . Don't knit for men.

But it's such a beautiful sweater. Maybe you could take some of your creations that you knit just for the shop and raffle them - proceeds going for more yarn, for a local charity, etc.
If I kept doing that then Yarn! would be the local charity.
I second the no knitting for men motion. I finally knit a sweater for my husband of 8 years, and guess what. Yep. He left. I am pretty sure it wasn't cuz of the sweater, but it only supports the theory. Knit for yourself and your kids and your girlfriends and your mannequins. Let the men buy theirs from the clearance rack at Old Navy (okay maybe I am still a little bitter!) ;-)
I know you don't want to hear this, but my boyfriend is perpetually cold and he wears all 28 of his sweaters (not all at once...sequentially). Too bad the one you're making will be way too big for him--it sounds like he and your mannequin have similar physiques. ;)
Bah. You lucky creature you. He is pretty lucky as well that he has 28 beautiful sweaters. I think I am going to give the one I am making to my friend Peter and he will felt it like he does all of his sweaters.
Wow - you really are having fun with the mannequins - kind of like life-sized dolls or paper dolls - cool! Fun with Chip and Jane....
